Network-based Call Signaling - threats to VoIP. The

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

The call signaling protocol is one layer of the overall PacketCable suite of specifications and relies upon companion protocol specifications to provide complete end-to-end
PacketCable functionality

Network-based Call Signaling, based on the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), is the VOIP signaling protocol adopted by the CableLab as a standard for PacketCable embedded clients, which is a network element that provides:

• Two or more traditional analog (RJ11) access lines to a voice-over-IP (VoIP) network.

• Optionally, one or more video lines to a VoIP network

MGCP is a call signaling protocol for use in a centralized call control architecture, and assumes relatively simple client devices. The call signaling protocol is one layer of the overall PacketCable suite of specifications and relies upon companion protocol specifications to provide complete end-to-end PacketCable functionality.

NCS provides a PacketCable profile of an application programming interface (MGCI), and a corresponding protocol (MGCP) for controlling voice-over-IP (VoIP) embedded clients from external call control elements. MGCI functions provide for connection control, endpoint control, auditing, and status reporting. They each use the same system model and the same naming conventions.

The NCS profile of MGCP has been modified from the MGCP 1.0 in the following ways:

• The NCS protocol only aims at supporting PacketCable-embedded clients. Functionality present in the MGCP 1.0 protocol, which was superfluous to NCS, has been removed.

• The NCS protocol contains extensions and modifications to MGCP. However, the MGCP architecture, and all of the MGCP constructs relevant to embedded clients, are preserved in NCS.

• The NCS protocol contains minor simplifications from MGCP 1.0

Taffy Nivert - continue

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Taffy Nivert (also Taffy Danoff) was born October 25, 1944, in Washington, DC.
She attended College of Steubenville before becoming a member of folk singing duo called Fat City with her then-husband Bill Danoff.
They would later compose several songs for John Denver and share a writing credit for “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
She won a Grammy Award in 1976 for her part in the song “Afternoon Delight,” which was resurrected in the public mind after Will Ferrell’s movie “Anchorman” featured it in a bit.
She toured with the Moody Blues and was a member of the Starland Vocal Band, which spun off into the eponymous television variety show “Starland Vocal Band”.
Nivert appeared as a guest on many shows including “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and “The John Denver Show.”
Today Nivert resides in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her daughter, Little Lucy, and was most recently interviewed on DC101’s Elliot in the Morning show.
An often hilarious raconteur, she is currently writing a roman à clef about her show business career with Washingtonian National Editor Kim Isaac Eisler. The project was put on hold in late 2007, when Eisler refused to continue unless Danoff stopped smoking and started dishing. She refused and work on the project was stymied, although Danoff pledged to continue on her own.

Sticky keys - the KDE desktop environment.

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Sticky keys is a feature of computer Desktop Environments. It is an accessibility feature to aid users who have physical disabilities. Sticky keys allows the user to press a modifier key, such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or the Windows key, and have it remain active until another key is pressed.

On Windows, it is enabled by default and activated by pressing the Shift key 5 times in sequence or by holding down a modifier key for longer than 5 seconds. When sticky keys is activated in Windows, a beep is sounded whenever the Shift, Ctrl, Windows key, or Alt keys are pressed henceforth. It can be disabled by pressing both Shift keys at the same time.

On KDE, one can enable it in the KDE control center.

On Windows XP, it can be disabled through the Control Panel’s Accessibility options. The shortcut used to re-enable it can also be disabled through the StickyKeys Settings found in the same dialog box.

Flaws

Microsoft Windows does not check the integrity of this file (%systemroot%\windows\system32\sethc.exe) before running it. If Windows File Protection is disabled, the sethc.exe file can be replaced with any other potentially malicious executable, such as cmd.exe, which can then be executed by pressing shift 5 times.

Non-credible threat - threats

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

A non-credible threat is a term used in game theory economics to describe a threat by a player in a sequential game that he would not carry out as it would not be in his best interest to do so.

A non-credible threat is made on the hope that it will be believed, and therefore the threatened undesirable action will not need to be carried out. For a threat to be credible within an equilibrium, whenever a node is reached where a threat should be fulfilled, it will be fulfilled. Those Nash equilibriums that rely on non-credible threats can be eliminated through backward induction.

Internet Party Line - ltd. VocalTec

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Internet Party Line (or simply iParty) was one of the first Internet telephony and conference software for Microsoft Windows. It was made by Intel and released as an experimental prototype in 1995. It featured a push-to-talk method of sending audio, in which each received audio clip was played in order without mixing, regardless of multiple people talking simultaneously. In this way, it addressed the problem of how to have an understandable group conversation in the face of large Internet latencies or low bandwidth.

Similar applications like iParty include Microsoft NetMeeting and VocalTec Internet Phone. Today Most of these older conference applications have been replaced by VoIP applications such as Skype.

Shangri-la (Titan) - thought

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Shangri-la is a large, dark region of Saturn’s moon Titan. It is named after Shangri-La, the mythical paradise in Tibet. It is thought to be an immense plain of dark material. It is thought that these regions of Titan were seas, but that they are now dry.

Shangri-la is studded with bright ‘islands’ of higher ground. It is bounded by the larger regions of high ground: Xanadu to the east, Adiri to the west, and Dilmun to the north.

The Huygens probe landed on a westerly part of Shangri-la, close to the boundary with Adiri.

OpenH323 - VoIP

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

The OpenH323 project goal is developing a full featured, open source (MPL) implementation of the H.323 Voice over IP protocol. The code is written in [[C++]] and, through the development effort of numerous people around the world, fully supports the H.323 protocol. The software has been integrated into a number of open source and commercial software products.

Software published under the OpenH323 project includes:

The implementation of VoIP protocols:

  • PWLib - a multi-platform C++ class library. Programs based on PWLib can run on both Microsoft Windows and Unix/Linux. The library contains both the “basic” classes (strings, arrays, lists) and the higher-level functionality (networking, multi-threading).
  • OpenH323 – a library for the development of H.323 applications. It uses PWLib for platform independence. The library has its own ASN.1 parser that generates the classes for encoding and decoding of the protocol messages used in H.323.

Sample network phones implementations:

  • OhPhone: Command-line phone
  • OpenPhone: GUI for OpenH323
