Megaco - VoIP

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The Gateway Control Protocol or Megaco/H.248 is a control protocol, used between a Media Gateway and a Media Gateway Controller in a VoIP network. It defines the necessary control mechanism to allow a Media Gateway Controller to control gateways in order to support voice/fax calls between PSTN-IP or IP-IP networks.

The protocol was the result of joint work of IETF and ITU. It is both defined by IETF’s RFC 3525 (which obsoleted RFC 3015) and by ITU-T’s H.248-1. It acts as the actual implementation of the Media Gateway Control Protocol.

Low latency - VoIP

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Low latency allows human-unnoticeable delays between an input being processed and the corresponding output providing real time characteristics. This can be especially important for internet connections utilizing services such as online gaming and VOIP - VOIP is not as important as a minor delay between input from each side of the conversation is generally blamed on non-technical issues.

However, online gaming demands low latency so as not to disadvantage players with low latencies due to highly varied ping times among fellow players - for this reason, game server applications generally favour players with lower latencies by determining the data relating to a player as known to the server, and allowing players to act on that, not the data as known by the fellow player’s client.

Internet telephony service provider - VoIP

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

An ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) offers an Internet data service for making telephone calls using VoIP (Voice over IP) technology. Most ITSPs use SIP, H.323, or IAX (although H.323 use is declining) for transmitting telephone calls as IP data packets. Customers may use traditional telephones with an analog telephony adapter (ATA) providing RJ11 to Ethernet connection.

In the United States, net2Phone began offering consumer VoIP service in 1995. Before 2003, many VoIP services required customers to make and receive phone calls through a personal computer on a LAN.

ITSPs are also known as VSP (Voice Service Provider) or simply VoIP Providers.

OTC Bulletin Board - Inc. NASDAQ:VOCL is

Monday, August 20th, 2007

The OTC Bulletin Board or OTCBB is an electronic quotation system in the United States that displays real-time quotes, last-sale prices, and volume information for many over-the-counter (OTC) equity securities that are not listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market or a national securities exchange. Broker-dealers who subscribe to the system can use the OTCBB to look up prices or enter quotes for OTC securities. Although the NASD oversees the OTCBB, the OTCBB is not part of the Nasdaq Stock Market. Fraudsters often claim or imply that an OTCBB company is a Nasdaq company to mislead investors into thinking that the company is bigger than it is.<ref>[1]</ref>

Companies quoted on the OTC Bulletin Board must be fully reporting (i.e. current with all required SEC filings) but have no market capitalization, minimum share price, governance or other requirements to be quoted. Companies which have been “de-listed” from stock exchanges for falling below minimum capitalization, minimum share price or other requirements often end up being quoted on the OTC Bulletin Board.

Stock of non reporting companies (those without current SEC filings) may be quoted in the Pink Sheets.

Stocks traded in OTC markets such as the OTCBB or Pink Sheets are usually thinly traded microcap or penny stocks and are avoided by many investors due to a well-founded fear that share prices are easily manipulated. The SEC issues stern warnings to investors to beware of common fraud and manipulation schemes.

Microcap Stock: A Guide for Investors put out by the SEC is highly recommended reading for investors considering buying stock in the OTC market.

Internet Party Line - VoIP

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Internet Party Line (or simply iParty) was one of the first Internet telephony and conference software for Microsoft Windows. It was made by Intel and released as an experimental prototype in 1995. It featured a push-to-talk method of sending audio, in which each received audio clip was played in order without mixing, regardless of multiple people talking simultaneously. In this way, it addressed the problem of how to have an understandable group conversation in the face of large Internet latencies or low bandwidth.

Similar applications like iParty include Microsoft NetMeeting and VocalTec Internet Phone. Today Most of these older conference applications have been replaced by VoIP applications such as Skype.

SightSpeed - VoIP

Monday, August 13th, 2007

SightSpeed is a videoconferencing, VoIP and instant messaging client for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems. The service allows people to make video calls, computer-to-computer voice calls, and calls to regular telephones, with free and paid versions.

Technology

SightSpeed’s technology is based on over seven years of research at Cornell University. SightSpeed uses a proprietary algorithm to remove unimportant information from images. The video conferencing technology is able to transmit 30 frame/s live video over a typical ADSL connection with minimal time lag. When this algorithm is combined with a standards based H263 codec, the result is fluid 30 fps video with little to no latency or lag.

SightSpeed’s video codec was originally developed at Cornell University’s Discover Lab and is based on H263.

SightSpeed’s network technology is SIP based.

Features

  • SightSpeed users are able to have free video calls with each other, often with no lag and high video clarity on a high speed Internet connection.
  • Video Mail messages can be sent to any e-mail address.
  • The SightSpeed software is able to host video conferences with up to four participants.
  • “Phone Out” is the name of the service that allows users to make phone calls to landlines and mobile phones, paying with pre-paid credit. “Phone In” allows SightSpeed users to receive phone calls from regular telephones.

Limitations

The main criticisms are:

  • Lack of true privacy features such as encryption.

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Clause 28 Children’s Protection Christian Democrats is a political party in the United Kingdom. Their main policy is to campaign for the reintroduction of Section 28, an amendment to the Local Government Act, 1988, which stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.

The party also campaigns for Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, against abortion and sex outside of marriage and for the use of the Christian Bible as a guide to life.

In the 2005 UK general election, the party leader David Braid stood for both the Crosby and the West Lancashire constituencies, receiving 157 and 292 votes respectively, and in the delayed election in South Staffordshire, receiving 67 votes.
