FIPS 140 - and information security vendors

Friday, March 28th, 2008

The Federal Information Processing Standard 140 (FIPS) are series of publications numbered 140 which are a U.S. government computer security standards that specify requirements for cryptography modules. As of December 2006, the current version of the standard is FIPS 140-2, issued on 25 May 2001.

Purpose of FIPS 140

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued the 140 Publication Series to coordinate the requirements and standards for cryptographic modules which include both hardware and software components for use by departments and agencies of the United States federal government. FIPS 140 does not purport to provide sufficient conditions to guarantee that a module conforming to its requirements is secure, still less that a system built using such modules is secure. The requirements cover not only the cryptographic modules themselves but also their documentation and (at the highest security level) some aspects of the comments contained in the source code.

User agencies desiring to implement cryptographic modules should confirm that the module they are using is covered by an existing validation certificate. FIPS 140-1 and FIPS 140-2 validation certificates specify the exact module name, hardware, software, firmware, and/or applet version numbers. For Levels 2 and higher, the operating platform upon which the validation is applicable is also listed. Vendors do not always maintain their baseline validations.

The Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) is operated jointly by the United States Government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Computer Security Division and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) of the Government of Canada. The use of validated cryptographic modules is required by the United States Government for all unclassified uses of cryptography. The Government of Canada also recommends the use of FIPS 140 validated cryptographic modules in unclassified applications of its departments.

Security levels

FIPS 140-2 defines four levels of security, simply named “Level 1″ to “Level 4″. It does not specify in detail what level of security is required by any particular application.

  • Level 1 the lowest, imposes very limited requirements; loosely, all components must be “production-grade” and various egregious kinds of insecurity must be absent.
  • Level 2 adds requirements for physical tamper-evidence and role-based authentication.
  • Level 3 adds requirements for physical tamper-resistance (making it difficult for attackers to gain access to sensitive information contained in the module) and identity-based authentication, and for a physical or logical separation between the interfaces by which “critical security parameters” enter and leave the module, and its other interfaces.
  • Level 4 makes the physical security requirements more stringent, and requires robustness against environmental attacks.

Scope of requirements

FIPS 140 imposes requirements in 11 different areas:

  • Cryptographic module specification (what must be documented)
  • Cryptographic module parts and interfaces (what information flows in and out, and how it must be segregated)
  • Roles, services and authentication (who can do what with the module, and how this is checked)
  • Finite state model (documentation of the high-level states the module can be in, and how transitions occur)
  • Physical security (tamper evidence and resistance, and robustness against extreme environmental conditions)
  • Operational environment (what sort of operating system the module uses and is used by)
  • Cryptographic key management (generation, entry, output, storage and destruction of keys)
  • EMI/EMC
  • Self-tests (what must be tested and when, and what must be done if a test fails)
  • Design assurance (what documentation must be provided to demonstrate that the module has been well designed and implemented)
  • Mitigation of other attacks (if a module is designed to mitigate against, say, TEMPEST attacks then its documentation must say how)

Brief history

FIPS 140-1, issued on 11 January 1994, was developed by a government and industry working group, composed of vendors and users of cryptographic equipment.
The group identified the four “security levels” and eleven “requirement areas” listed above, and specified requirements for each area at each level.

FIPS 140-2, issued on 25 May 2001, takes account of changes in available technology and official standards since 1994, and of comments received from the vendor, tester, and user communities.

FIPS 140-3 is a new version of the standard which is currently under development.

FIPS 140-2 has been the main input document to the international standard ISO/IEC 19790:2006 Security requirements for cryptographic modules issued on 1 March 2006.

Orange ribbon - and awareness

Friday, March 28th, 2008

The orange ribbon is a symbol adopted for a wide variety of uses.

  • It is a symbol of the Ukrainian Orange Revolution of 2004. The orange color denotes the color of the opposition party of Viktor Yushchenko. (Ribbons are common symbols of non-violent protest.)
  • In Israel, orange ribbons indicate opposition to the Israel “disengagement” plan of 2004, as opposed to blue ribbons, which indicate support. The color was adopted by disengagement opponents on advice from Adir Zik. Although the disengagement was executed in 2005, supporters continue to use the color as a symbol of general opposition to further withdrawals. It is also used as a persistent reminder of their continued opposition to the actions of the government in surrendering territory to the PLO, Hamas, and Hezbollah and of expelling Jews in general, or inhibiting their expansion, especially in Judea and Samaria. Often written on the post-Disengagement ribbons is the phrase “לא נשכח ולא נסלח”, “we will not forget and we will not forgive”) as a symbol of their desire to bring to justice those who took part in their expulsion and dispossession and of their demand that the Israeli government restore the expelled Jews to the lands from which they were expelled.
  • In Australia, orange ribbons are worn on Fridays in support of the release of Australian citizen David Matthew Hicks who has been detained in Guantanamo Bay for 5 years without charge. It was originally an initiative called ‘Orange Fridays’ and is now supported by Amnesty International which demands that David Hicks be returned to Australia to face a fair trial or be released.
  • In Canada, orange ribbons are worn as an awareness ribbon symbolizes Addiction Recovery. Addiction is defined to include ANY “uncontrolled compulsive use” or compulsive obsessive behavior that makes life unmanageable. The campaign was launched on October 1st 2004 by the non-profit group R.A.F.T. for their first “Walk for Recovery”. It has since been adopted by a number of other support groups who battle addictions. [1]
  • In Canada, orange ribbons are worn to support the New Democratic Party candidate Nicolas R. Thibodeau in Mount Royal. The Orange Ribbon Foundation concern is to support Integrity, Democracy, Equality, Environment and Security in the political ring. The campaign was launched on January 23rd 2007 when he was reinvestited a year after his first attempt to represent Mount royal constituents. [2]
  • An orange ribbon or orange-and-white ribbon is an awareness ribbon for Self Injury Awareness Day (SIAD) (March 1). SIAD promotes awareness and support of those people who self harm. They were formerly colored red, blue and black.
  • The orange ribbon is the common symbol for a change of government in the Swedish national election in September of 2006. The orange ribbon is an initiative from The Young Conservatives, The Young Liberals, The Young Christian-Democrats and The Young Center.
  • The orange ribbon is used to honor roadway construction workers.
  • The orange ribbon is used as an anti-racism symbol, or as a symbol for the freedom to own guns.
  • The orange ribbon shows support for Hunger Awareness, Lupus, Racial Tolerance, or Cultural Diversity. [3]
  • The orange ribbon shows awareness of leukemia, feral cats, motorcyclist safety, Multiple Sclerosis, or Agent Orange exposure.
  • The orange ribbon is worn as a symbol representing World Harmony Day.
  • At county and state fairs in the United States, an orange ribbon is awarded to the competitor finishing in sixth place in a contest.
  • On March 2, 2007, the U.S. Senate passed a unanimous resolution to designate March as Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month, symbolized by an orange ribbon.

Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy - statement

Monday, March 24th, 2008

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy was formulated in October of 1978 by more than 200 evangelical leaders at a conference sponsored by the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy, held in Chicago. The statement was designed to defend the position of Biblical inerrancy against a perceived trend toward liberal conceptions of Scripture. The undersigners came from a variety of evangelical Christian denominations, and include James Boice, Carl F. H. Henry, Kenneth Kantzer, J. I. Packer, Francis Schaeffer, and R. C. Sproul.

Leading inerrantists regard the Chicago Statement as a very thorough statement of what they mean by “inerrancy”. The statement elaborates on various details in Articles formed as couplets of “WE AFFIRM … and WE DENY …”. Under the statement inerrancy applies only to the original manuscripts (which no longer exist, but can be inferred on the basis of extant copies), not to the copies or translations themselves. Further, in the statement inerrancy does not refer to a blind literal interpretation, but allows for figurative, poetic and phenomenological language, so long as it was the author’s intent to present a passage as literal or symbolic. (see Biblical hermeneutics)

Arcor (Telecommunications) - such as Deutsche

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008
For the Argentine company, see Arcor

Arcor is the second-biggest fixed phone line provider in Germany. It is owned by Vodafone (73.65%), Deutsche Bahn (18.17%) and Deutsche Bank (8.18%) and has its headquarters in Eschborn near Frankfurt. Arcor is one of the few telecommunication companies in Germany who operate an ISDN network independent from the incumbent Deutsche Telekom.

Arcor has 2.1 million ADSL customers and 1.1 million ISDN customers. Arcor was the first German telecommunications provider offering a phone flatrate for the ISDN line.

History

Arcor was the result of a joint venture by Mannesmann, now belonging to Vodafone and Deutsche Bank, a multinational bank from Germany. After the participation of the telecommunications company of the Deutsche Bahn, called DBKom, the company with its official name Mannesmann Arcor AG & Co. KG was formed in 1996. After the buyout of Mannesmann by Vodafone the company was renamed as Arcor AG & Co. KG.

Since April 2005 Arcor also offers IP telephony.

Censorship controversy

In September 2007 various computer-magazines reported that Arcor is blocking their ISDN/DSL subscribers from accessing a small number of pornography sites (for example YouPorn) on the routing level. According to a well-known computer news site, this is due to a request received by the company by a competing pornography services that is claiming the respective sites have no or inadequate age verification measures according to german laws. http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/95758 heise.de newsticker (in german)

German State Party - such as Deutsche

Friday, March 21st, 2008

The German State Party (Deutsche Staatspartei or DStP) was a short-lived German political party of the Weimar Republic, formed by the merger of the German Democratic Party (Deutsche Demokratische Partei, DDP) with the People’s National Reich Association (the political wing of the Young German Order) in July 1930. The merger of the left liberal party DDP with the nationalist corporatism of the Young German Order did not prove a successful one - the party lost seats drastically in the 1930 parliamentary elections from its showing in 1928, and the People’s National Reich Association reichstag delegates soon seceded from the party, leaving it essentially the DDP under a new name.

The party continued to compete in parliamentary elections, with little success, until it dissolved itself following the Nazi takeover in 1933.

British Military Mission to Poland - is: VOIPSA’s mission

Monday, March 17th, 2008

The British Military Mission to Poland was an effort by Britain to aid the nascent Second Polish Republic after it achieved its independence in November, 1918, at the end of the First World War.
It worked in parallel with the larger and much more significant French Military Mission to Poland.
It was commanded by British General Adrian Carton De Wiart (who succeeded General Louis Botha). General Carton De Wiart also headed the British Military Mission to Poland in 1939.

It should not be confused with the Interallied Mission to Poland, an improvised effort launched by Lloyd George on July 21, 1920, at the height of the crisis before the Battle of Warsaw.
