Security management - security vendors providers and

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Security Management is a broad field of management related to asset management, physical security and human resource safety functions. It entails the identification of an organization’s information assets and the development, documentation and implementation of policies, standards, procedures and guidelines.

In network management it is the set of functions that protects telecommunications networks and systems from unauthorized access by persons, acts, or influences and that includes many subfunctions, such as creating, deleting, and controlling security services and mechanisms; distributing security-relevant information; reporting security-relevant events; controlling the distribution of cryptographic keying material; and authorizing subscriber access, rights, and privileges.

Management tools such as information classification, risk assessment and risk analysis are used to identify threats, classify assets and to rate system vulnerabilities so that effective control can be implemented.

Session Announcement Protocol - Protocol and is licensed

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Session Announcement Protocol (SAP) is a protocol for broadcasting multicast session information.

A SAP listening application can listen to the well-known SAP multicast address and construct a guide of all advertised multicast sessions. SAP was published by the IETF as RFC 2974.

SAP typically uses Session Description Protocol (SDP) as the format of the session descriptions, and the multicast sessions typically use Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).

Communications jamming - VocalTec Communications Inc.

Friday, June 27th, 2008

In telecommunication, the term communications jamming (COMJAM) has the following meanings:

  1. The portion of electronic jamming that is directed against communications circuits and systems.
  2. The prevention of successful radio communications by the use of electromagnetic signals, i.e., the deliberate radiation, reradiation, or reflection of electromagnetic energy with the objective of impairing the effective use of electronic communications systems.

The aim of communications jamming is to prevent communications by electromagnetic means, or at least to degrade communications sufficiently to cause delays in transmission and reception. Jamming may be used in conjunction with deception to achieve an overall electronic counter-measure (ECM) plan implementation.

Initiation (album) - Initiation

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Initiation is the sixth album by Todd Rundgren, released in the spring of 1975.

With this album, Rundgren fully embraced the synth prog sound he began exploring more in depth with Utopia. Like the album before, Todd, Rundgren seemed more interested in experimenting with the capabilities of the synthesizer than in crafting pop songs.

This interest culminated in the side-long, multipart “A Treatise on Cosmic Fire,” which is a springboard for synth experimentation. This ambitious piece is credited as a solo effort with Rundgren playing all instruments, unlike the first side which also credits other musicians. On vinyl, “A Treatise on Cosmic Fire” was indexed into four seamless tracks, each consisting of one of the four movements of the piece; track times for the individual movements are given below. Both versions erroneously list the song as being 36 minutes exactly.

The album is one of the longest single LPs of all time, totaling almost 68 minutes of playing time. This fact was noted on the album’s original inner sleeve with a note describing how the sound needed to be condensed in order to fit the songs on the album and as a result, it could easily be damaged if played with a worn needle and the sound quality might be low. It was recommended that a person record the album to tape to improve the sound. The CD version avoids this issue.

Semi-square (astrological aspect) - and thought

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

In astrology, a semi-square is an astrological aspect that two planets make when they are 45° apart from each other. The semi-square is considered to be the 8th harmonic of the chart because it is one-eighth of the 360° circle that the zodiac resides in (i.e., 360 / 8 = 45). The semi-square is considered to be a minor hard aspect because it is thought to cause friction in the native’s life and prompt her to take some action to reduce that friction.

For example, if the Sun is posited in 10° Aquarius and Venus is posited in 25° Pisces then a semi-square would occur. This is thought to indicate that the native is not likely to be totally happy in matters of love. She is thought to have a tendency to seek out those individuals who are not necessarily compatible to her, and this may lead to a sense of tension and actions to correct what to her may be frustration.

The Strawberry Statement - The stated mission statement

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The Strawberry Statement is a non-fiction book by James Simon Kunen, written when he was 19, which chronicled his experiences at Columbia University from 1966–1968, particularly the April 1968 protests and takeover of the office of the dean of Columbia by student protesters. The title comes from a speech made by Herbert Deane, a Columbia administrator, who deprecated student opinions about university administrative decisions as having no more importance than if the students had said they liked the taste of strawberries.

Deane himself said often that he had been misquoted on the matter. He insisted that student opinions about university policy did matter to him, but that if they were offered without reasoned explanations, then they meant no more to him than if a majority of students liked strawberries.

Kunen himself has said that the book’s title owed just as much to the psychedelic name of the rock group the Strawberry Alarm Clock as to Deane’s statement.

A movie, The Strawberry Statement, loosely based on the book, but fictionalized, was made in 1970.

Security awareness - education and awareness and

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Security awareness is the knowledge and attitude members of an organization possess regarding the protection of the physical and, especially, information assets of that organization. Many organizations require formal security awareness training for all workers when they join the organization and periodically thereafter, usually annually.

Topics covered in security awareness training include:

  • The nature of sensitive material and physical assets they may come in contact with, such as trade secrets, privacy concerns and government classified information
  • Employee and contractor responsibilities in handling sensitive information, including review of employee nondisclosure agreements
  • Requirements for proper handling of sensitive material in physical form, including marking, transmission, storage and destruction
  • Proper methods for protecting sensitive information on computer systems, including password policy and use of two-factor authentication
  • Other computer security concerns, including malware, phishing, social engineering, etc.
  • Workplace security, including building access, wearing of security badges, reporting of incidents, forbidden articles, etc.
  • Consequences of failure to properly protect information, including potential loss of employment, economic consequences to the firm, damage to individuals whose private records are divulged, and possible civil and criminal penalties

Being Security Aware means you understand that there is the potential for some people to deliberately or accidentally steal, damage, or misuse the data that is stored within our computer systems and through out our organization. Therefore, it would be prudent to support the assets of our institution (information, physical, and personal) by trying to stop that from happening.

According to ENISA ‘Awareness of the risks and available safeguards is the first line of defence for the security of information systems and networks.’

‘The focus of Security Awareness consultancy should be to achieve a long term shift in the attitude of employees towards security, whilst promoting a cultural and behavioural change within an organisation. Security policies should be viewed as key enablers for the organisation, not as a series of rules restricting the efficient working of your business.’

TestYourVoIP - free VoIP testing

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

TestYourVoIP is a free web service run by Brix Networks that allows you to test your internet connection to see how well it will perform when used for VoIP calls. The tests are performed using Java to allow easy testing with little local setup. As an alternative the site offers a “Golden Phone” test which can be placed from any telephone or VoIP program or device that can place a call over the normal phone network. There are various test locations in the US and worldwide.

The site gives you the International Telecommunications Union standard “Mean Opinion Score” (MOS) for a call. It also shows what factors caused the MOS to be reduced. This helps with diagnosis of a bad call.

Reverse Address Resolution Protocol - address current and

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP) is a network layer protocol used to obtain an IP address for a given hardware address (such as an Ethernet address). It has been rendered obsolete by BOOTP and the more modern DHCP, which both support a much greater feature set than RARP.

The primary limitations of RARP are that each MAC must be manually configured on a central server, and that the protocol only conveys an IP address. This leaves configuration of subnetting, gateways, and other information to other protocols or the user.

Another limitation of RARP compared to BOOTP or DHCP is that it is a non-IP protocol. This means that like ARP it can’t be handled by the TCP/IP stack on the client, but is instead implemented separately.

RARP is the complement of ARP.

RARP differs from Inverse Address Resolution Protocol (InARP), which is designed to locate the IP address associated with another station’s MAC address.

RARP is described in RFC 903.
