We Wish You a Merry Christmas - to bring together Voice

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

“We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a popular secular 16th century English carol from West Country of England. It is one of the few traditional holiday carols that makes mention of the New Year’s celebration.

Lyrics

1. We wish you a merry Christmas; We wish you a merry Christmas;
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Chorus:
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin.
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! (Or “Good tidings for Christmas and a happy New Year!”)

2. Now, bring us some figgy pudding; now, bring us some figgy pudding;
Now, bring us some figgy pudding and bring some out here!
Chorus

3. For we all like figgy pudding; for we all like figgy pudding;
For we all like figgy pudding: so bring some out here!
Chorus

4. And we won’t go until we’ve got some; We won’t go until we’ve got some;
And we won’t go until we’ve got some; so bring some out here!
Chorus

Team Bianchi - Telekom

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Team Bianchi was a makeshift team that was put together from the remnants of the Coast team in time for the 2003 Tour de France.

Team Coast had been unable to pay the salaries of their riders and Bianchi took over the team and the role of title sponsor. Coast had recently signed Jan Ullrich following his departure from Team Telekom after his drunk driving and amphetamine use. During the 2003 tour while riding for Bianchi, Ullrich placed second to Lance Armstrong by just 61 seconds, his closest ever margin in any of Armstrong’s seven victorious years. In the process, Ullrich also managed to upstage Alexander Vinokourov, Telekom’s highest-placed rider, who finished third.

Team Bianchi had planned to continue on as a professional road racing team. However, Ullrich’s return to his former team Telekom (now T-Mobile), as well as the departure of Ángel Casero led to the demise of Team Bianchi as they now lacked the star power necessary to justify a top tier team.

Constitutio Antoniniana - Italia. VocalTec released

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Constitutio Antoniniana (Latin: “Constitution [or Edict] of Antoninus”) was an edict issued in 212, by the Roman Emperor Caracalla. The law declared that all free-born men in the Roman Empire were to be given full Roman citizenship and all free-born women in Empire were given the same rights as Roman women were.

Before 212, for the most part only inhabitants of Italia held full Roman citizenship. Colonies of Romans established in other provinces, Romans (or their descendants) living in provinces, the inhabitants of various cities throughout the Empire, and small numbers of local nobles (such as kings of client countries) held full citizenship also. Whereas, at most, the majority of provincials merely held limited Roman citizenship rights (if that at all).

The reasons Caracalla passed this law were mainly to increase the number of people available to tax and to serve in the legions, as only full citizens could serve as legionaries in the Roman Army. This, however, came at the cost to the auxiliaries, which primarily consisted of non-citizen men.

Direct Inward Dialing - VoIP security education

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Direct Inward Dialing (DID, also called DDI in Europe) is a feature offered by telephone companies for use with their customers’ PBX systems, whereby the telephone company (telco) allocates a range of numbers all connected to their customer’s PBX. As calls are presented to the PBX, the number that the caller dialed is also given, so the PBX can route the call to the desired person or bureau within the organization.

Developed by AT&T in the 1960s, patterned upon the earlier IKZ service of the Deutsche Bundespost, this feature enables companies to have fewer lines than extensions, while still having a unique number for each extension, callable from outside the company.

By way of example, each extension of the PBX system may be assigned a seven-digit external telephone number, with a fixed four- or five-digit prefix. Someone who knows the internal extension of his/her correspondent can dial the seven-digit number and be connected directly to the person called, bypassing the operator or PBX auto-attendant.

This system is also used by fax servers. Instead of an exchange at the end of the 234 000 line, a computer running fax server software and fax modem cards uses the last three digits to identify the recipient of the fax. This allows 1000 people to have their own individual fax numbers, even though there is only one ‘fax machine’.

When people give out their work number and say it’s a “direct line”, often what they mean is that it’s a DID number.

DID (DDI) and VoIP aka “Call Through”

DID” numbers have particular relevance for VoIP communications. In order for people connected to the traditional PSTN network to call people connected to VoIP networks, DID numbers from the PSTN network are obtained by the administrators of the VoIP network, and assigned to a gateway in the VoIP network. The gateway will then route calls incoming from the PSTN across the IP network to the appropriate VoIP user. Similarly, calls originating in the VoIP network will appear to users on the PSTN as originating from one of the assigned DID numbers.

US DID numbers can be purchased in bulk from a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier.

International DID numbers can be purchased in bulk from international DID providers like:

DID World Wide (60 countries covered)

Voxbone (40 countries covered)

There are also a number of DID resellers offering DID numbers for individuals and small enterprises:

DID eXchange

Ring WorldWide call forwarding service

Virtualphoneline

PimpMyNumber (UK Numbering Options)

Rosemary Nelson - threats

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Rosemary Nelson (September 4 1958 – March 15, 1999) was a prominent Roman Catholic solicitor from Northern Ireland.

Nelson, née Magee, obtained her law degree at Queen’s University, Belfast (QUB). She worked with other solicitors for a number of years before opening her own practice. As a result of her defence work, representing clients in a number of high profile cases (including defending a client accused of murdering two Royal Ulster Constabulary officers), she stated that she had received death threats from members of the RUC.

She also represented the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition in nearby Portadown in its long-running and often violent standoff against the Orange Order.

Many of her clients claimed that RUC officers had threatened her through them several times. In 1998, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Param Curamaswamy, noted these threats in his annual report, and stated in a television interview that he believed her life could be in danger. He made recommendations to the British government concerning threats from police against lawyers, which were not acted upon. Later that year, Nelson testified before a committee of the United States Congress investigating human rights in Northern Ireland, confirming that death threats had been made against her and her three children.UNHCR press release UNHCHR

Nelson was killed by a car bomb outside her home in Lurgan, County Armagh, in 1999 at the age of 40. A Protestant loyalist paramilitary group calling itself the Red Hand Defenders claimed responsibility for the killing.BBC News report March 1999

She is survived by her husband and three children.

In 2004, the Cory Collusion Inquiry recommended that the UK Government hold an inquiry into the circumstances of Nelson’s death.

The resulting inquiry into her murder opened at the Craigavon Civic Centre, North County Armagh, in April, 2005.BBC News report on inquiry In September 2006 the British security service MI5 announced it would be represented at the inquiry. This move provoked criticism from Nelson’s family, fearing MI5 may remove sensitive or classified information.BBC News report September 2006 on MI5 involvement in inquiry
